Why would President Obama apologize? His statement on the incident was actually brilliant and spot on. Should he have known the media would focus on the line about cops acting stupidly (which clearly they did, but let's leave that because it's neither here nor there)..? Well, probably.. but he does tend to answer questions openly and honestly sometimes which is a pretty risky thing in the room full of media and their cameras.

By all acounts, including those of black cops who were present, Gates was practically begging to be arrested.  How do you figure the cops were "clearly" acting stupid?

Although I will concede that Obama has a tendency to shoot from the hip, a trait shared by McCain and which was a contributing factor to his defeat.
